How to identify difference between an attorney and a lawyer?

Most people do not understand that there is a difference between a lawyer and an attorney. Lawyers and attorneys both complete their education and graduated from a reputed law school. However, if you try to look at it more closely and thoroughly and grasp the meaning from definitions of each word, you will find a difference. An attorney is someone who can represent individuals in court, whereas a lawyer doesn’t. Both the terms are often used in place of each other.

Who is a lawyer?

A lawyer is someone with graduation from law school, having a JD degree and but not appeared in the Bar exam yet. If a person has not yet sit in the bar exam in the state, he or she can’t represent clients in the law court. To practice law, serve legal advice, and represent client in a court, one must appear and pass the bar exam. If a person has not conducted the law exam yet, even while being able to provide legal information, the person cannot explicate the federal and state laws to their clients for their legal matters.

Who is an attorney?

An attorney is a person with graduation degree from law school and passed through the bar exam in the state they are planning to practice law, and is a member of the State Bar Association of the state, he or she is practicing. An attorney is the person working as a practitioner in the court. When you hire an attorney in Miami, you will get to hear the term attorney fees at some point during the process. Attorney fee is the amount shared as invoice to a client for providing legal services on his or her behalf. These fees can vary as hourly or on an emergency. One can define the attorney fees through a legal service agreement or by statute or a court.

How to establish difference?

The state’s bar association is the organization that administers the bar exam. It includes asking a series of questions that evaluate your knowledge about the legal principles and state-explicit laws. It basically takes around two to three days to do that and it can be quite time-consuming to prepare for one. Law school is the authority that produces both lawyers as well as attorneys. Law school courses however, focus on federal and state laws and cases from the past. Students also get to learn how they can apply logic to the cases and evaluate how to meet client requirements. Both lawyers and attorneys can choose their field to specialize while they are in law school. Students appearing in the certifications or licensing can provide legal advice to the specialty they choose while they are practicing.

Make sure to take some time when you are comparing the different attorneys with lawyers and identify which is the one that makes you feel the most better to make your decision.
